Our Story
India has long been a significant consumer and contributor to global open source software. Developers, students, and organizations from India actively participate in projects that power critical digital infrastructure worldwide.
However, the origination, governance, and long-term stewardship of many such initiatives have largely remained outside the country.
The Bharat Open Source Innovation Foundation (BOSIF) was established to address this gap.
BOSIF emerged from the recognition that India requires institutional mechanisms—not ad-hoc efforts—to nurture open source initiatives that are conceived, governed, and sustained from India, while remaining globally collaborative and community-driven.
The Foundation was created as a Section-8 not-for-profit organization to ensure neutrality, transparency, and long-term public interest stewardship of open source infrastructure and innovation.
