Building India’s Open Source Infrastructure for the World
The Bharat Open Source Innovation Foundation (BOSIF) is a Section-8 not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering open source innovation, infrastructure, and indigenous technology development in India.
BOSIF provides a neutral, transparent, and community-driven platform where educational institutions, industry, researchers, students, and global partners collaborate to create, govern, and sustain open source initiatives originating from India.
Why BOSIF Exists
India is one of the world’s largest consumers and contributors of open source software. Yet, much of the governance, stewardship, and origin of major open source platforms lies outside the country.
BOSIF exists to:
- Enable India-origin open source initiatives
- Strengthen academic and research participation
- Support student-led innovation and applied learning
- Establish transparent governance models rooted in public interest
BOSIF focuses on building foundations, not products.

- Community-first decision-making
The Foundation operates under a clearly defined governance framework, with separation of strategic oversight, advisory guidance, and operational execution.
Get Involved
BOSIF welcomes participation from institutions, organizations, and individuals who share its vision of building a strong, open, and inclusive digital infrastructure ecosystem for India.
A Long-Term Commitment
BOSIF is not a short-term initiative or a commercial platform.
It is a long-term institutional effort to ensure that India not only contributes to open source—but originates, governs, and sustains it for generations to come.
